New iPad is Hot Hot Hot

The new iPad is on fire, selling 3 million units in just 3 days. It’s also literally hot, running 5.3 degrees centigrade (41.54 degrees F) warmer than the iPad 2. Dutch tech site Tweakers.net used a forward looking infrared camera (FLIR) to measure the temperature differences between an iPad 2 and the new iPad.

At the hottest parts, the new iPad warms up to 33.6 degrees Celsius while the iPad 2 hits just 38.3 degrees C.

Some iPad owners posted in forums with similar observations in the past few days, but most were dismissed by trolls as being too sensitive (one even said turning off the new iPad will definitely cool it down).

The area where the most heat radiates is believed to be the location of the processors, and the SGX543MP4 GPU of the new iPad seems to be working overtime to keep the vaunted retina display (2048 x 1536) crisp and clear. In the FLIR image the iPad 2′s processor area also warmed up a bit, but the PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU didn’t have as much eye candy to worry about.

The new iPad’s larger battery will also be a factor down the line — just when Apple wanted to forget the simultaneous combustion of an iPhone 4 last November.

Apple’s senior VP of marketing Phil Schiller is more excited about the sales figures though.

The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold-the strongest iPad launch yet. Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.

Expect more new iPads by the end of this week, as Apple releases the iPad in 24 more countries starting at 8:00 a.m. local time, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Early adopters will literally have a hot item that’s been selling like hotcakes.
