Xiaomi Mi2 Launched, But Will it Also Sell Outside of China?

Xiaomi has just made its much-anticipated launch of their second-generation smartphone. The Android MIUI-based Xiaomi Mi2 will come with impressive specs, such as a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip and a high-resolution display promising higher pixels per inch than the iPhone 4S retina display.

Xiaomi promises to keep prices low, selling the Mi2 at 1,999 yuan (US$ 314), while lowering the price of the original Mi-One to 1,299 yuan(US$ 204). The company is also marketing another smartphone, the 1S, at 1,599 yuan (US$ 235).

Here are some specs:

  • 1.5 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • Adreno 320 GPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen at 1280×720 pixel resolution
  • 8 megapixel rear camera (with upgraded F/2.0 lens)
  • 2 megapixel front camera
  • HDMI-compatible USB port
  • HSPA+ connectivity up to 42 Mbps

While specs are impressive for the price, some commentators say Xiaomi earns from a usage-based model, which means that even with a $314 price tag, users are expected to pay for apps and services.

There is also a rumor that Xiaomi may be interested in bringing the Mi2 or a predecessor to European markets by 2013. Do check out the promo video of what MIUI v4 can do. Interested?
